The Grove’s Certificate or Diploma in Organisational Practice & Mental Health at Work (MHaW) brings together experts from the fields of consulting, organisational development, coaching, mental health at work, diversity, inclusion, resilience, leadership and performance.
This unique combination as a Certificate or Diploma qualification will equip mental health professionals with:
The Certificate version is for experiential learning and CPD attendance only – with the option to pay for further group supervision.
The Diploma version adds another layer to the Certificate, with an additional requirement to gain a placement with an organisation, complete a case study and a reflective essay. Included in the fee, all Diploma students can join The Grove’s organisational supervision group and there is additional tutorial support on an individual basis for those gaining a placement as part of the Diploma qualification.
Why we developed this course
Organisations are increasingly focused on the mental health of their teams as a core part of their overall strategy. Organisations suffer in much the same way as individuals, often having to balance complex issues around people management, leadership, performance and success. Increasingly organisations want and need professionals with mental health expertise to work alongside them in interventions to improve the working lives of their teams, helping them to provide both healthy and meaningful working environments alongside success and performance.
The Grove’s Certificate and Diploma in Organisational Practice and Mental Health at Work (MHaW) brings together experts from the fields of consulting, organisational development, coaching, mental health at work, diversity, inclusion, resilience, leadership and performance. The programme seeks to bring together often disparate but highly related fields in Organisational work to give you a broad understanding of key organisational subjects and issues so that you can introduce this field into your practice and work successfully with Companies and Organisations. This dynamic and contemporary programme enables graduates to work in an Organisation with high levels of confidence, skills and practical understanding of how to deliver interventions around the subject matter facing todays modern Organisation. Further this programme pays particular attention to consultant self-care and offers an extensive toolkit for the practitioner to make use of.
Modern organisations require consultants to be informed around core concepts of leadership, mental health issues, management models, high-performance, culture, group dynamics, diversity & inclusion and resilience. This course brings these unique subjects to life with real input and discussion from our panel of engaged speakers from a broad cross section of organisations. The course central aim is to enable practitioners to work at breadth in an Organisation, enabling them to take on a wider variety of briefs, including topic areas such as; mental health and performance, resilience, diversity and inclusion and culture change and deliver them effectively digitally or onsite in organisations either as a consultant or leader.
All student benefit from access to The Grove’s Organisational Supervision and Networking Group to enable them to be in touch with the tutors and peers and discuss their work with Organisations. Students who take the Diploma course will benefit from additional 1-1 support to help them to gain access to placement opportunities for real world experience.
This programme and the courses within it are designed to equip qualified mental health professionals (counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists) with the understanding and skills to work therapeutically and ethically in an Organisational setting as a consultant. Other related professionals such as case managers, keyworkers or service managers are welcome to apply.
The 8 day Certificate / Diploma Course runs over 4 weekends from September to December each year. To receive the CPD Certificate, the participant will attend the CPD training dates only. To receive the Diploma award, the participant will undertake additional written assignments, attend Supervision and gain an Organisational placement.
This course is principally designed for qualified therapists, psychiatrists, counsellors, clinical psychologists, Coaches or other related professional field. Participants should be well-established in their practice. The starting point of the course requires that all participants have competence in core relational skills. All participants must have qualified as a counsellor, psychotherapist, psychiatrist and attended or studied online the 2 day Organisational Foundation Course at some point in the last 2 years.
The Grove’s courses have been successfully recognised as CPD for members of the following membership bodies: BACP, UKCP, COSRT, NCP, NCS, AHPP, BPS, among others. Organisations such as universities, colleges, the NHS, Relate, MIND, and Place2B have also supported their therapists in taking training with The Grove. This is a mark of unofficial validation of our courses as worthy of being listed on the CPD logs for these organisations and therapists.
The Grove Practice is accredited by NCP (National Council for Psychotherapists) as a CPD training centre. As such, all The Grove’s courses are awarded NCP accreditation for CPD (Continuous Professional Development). This accreditation provides reassurance regarding high standards of teaching and course content. The NCP is one of the longest established membership organisations for this profession, formed in 1971 following the “Foster Report” on the statutory registration of psychotherapists, with a national and international network of therapists.
This 8-day course has been approved by the Association for Coaching as providing recognised CPD hours. This is a mark of recognition for our programme, demonstrating that our course provides valuable professional development.

The Organisational Programme is offered at three distinct levels:
For the award of a CPD Certificate in the Foundations in Working with Organisations (OF) – a 2 day (12 hours of CPD) introduction to the foundations of Organisational work. The OF course is a pre-requisite to attend the Certificate or Diploma level awards. The course commences on the 11th and 12th September 2021. Participants are able to attend this course as a stand-alone or upgrade their award level once they have attended the OF training. For the award of a CPD Certificate in Organisational Practice and MHaW – an additional 6 Day / 3 weekends of an in depth course offering high quality teaching on Organisational Practice (requires students to have either attended or studied the Organisational Foundation Training either in person or on our pre-recorded online training or completed an equivalent access course)
For the award of a Diploma in Organisational Practice and MHaW – All of the above plus, a theoretical/reflective essay, case study as part of an Organisational placement of at least 25 hours of Organisational Practice in a relevant sector/field and appropriate scope of work. The Diploma course also includes additional Supervision and tutorial time to help with gaining access to an Organisation and support whilst on placement.
Although the qualification does not have an Ofqual-regulated status, we regard it as being taught at the equivalent of Level 6 (Certificate) or Level 7 (Diploma): as a post-qualification training with the requirement to evaluate theoretical concepts and implementation in practice with a significant level of reflective self-assessment.
The course will be led by a highly experienced and diverse team. The core tutors are Robert Rees and Phil Hayes with other guest tutors in specialist areas: Sarah Cartwright, Shona Crooks (Diversity and Inclusion/Group Dynamics), Dr Lopa Winters (Executive Coaching, Psychodynamic Model, Culture), Dr Roberta Babb (Consultancy, Leadership) and Sarah Paton-Briggs (Resilience). The course is taught at a level suitable for qualified professionals who are already established in their own mode of practice. The content is presented at a level equivalent to post-graduate study. This means that attendees will be expected to:
The course consists of theoretical, experiential and supervisory components. The theoretical input encourages critical engagement with the theory and practice of Organisational work. Assessment is ongoing and aims to ensure that students are able to work with in an Organisational setting; that there is congruence between the student’s theoretical knowledge and their competence in practising in this field. Teaching emphasises the multi-layered, multi-faceted processes of Organisational work, including the use of one’s own process.
The course culture is explicitly “high support” and “high challenge”.
The integrative stance of the course is in recognition that there will differences in training background or theoretical approach between participants. We appreciate the diversity of training modalities and approaches that participants bring to the course. Onto that foundation we offer the opportunity to build a cohesive way of working in an Organisation.
The course philosophy aims to establish a learning community in which a working alliance is established which encourages participants to take responsibility for their own learning and to support the learning of other course members.

Those undertaking the DOP will be required to complete an essay on organisational approaches, your learning and personal reflection. Attend Supervision Groups. As well as a case study on your placement.

For the award of a Diploma in Organisational Practice (DOP) – Sufficient attendance and satisfactory completion of:
The Diploma course also includes additional Supervision and tutorial time to help with gaining access to an Organisation and support whilst on placement.
Guidelines for the essay and case study will be written in the course handbook. Briefings will also be given verbally during the course. There will also be continuous assessment by the tutors of the student’s presence in the student group and the ability to integrate the taught material.
Additionally, a minimum of 80% attendance (6 of the total 8 days) is required to be awarded the Certificate or Diploma course title.
If less than 6 days of the Certificate course are attended, the CPD attendance will list the dates which were attended.
If less than 6 days of the Diploma course are attended, the participant will need to agree a suitable substitute for the days which were missed. This may comprise a book review, a written piece, or a tutorial (at additional cost).
The Grove Practice is a long-established counselling and psychotherapy practice based in central London, with a team of respected and accredited therapists. The Grove has developed a number of high quality professional training courses, including this training. Indeed, the growing demand for the application of psychological models in organisational settings led to the additional establishment of The Grove’s training programmes, coaching team and organisational consultancy.
The faculty for the course is drawn from the following tutors. The course will be jointly led by Robert Rees and Phil Hayes, supported by additional facilitators who will be contributing their specialist areas of expertise.
Phil has over 30 years’ experience of working in the leadership development and executive coaching fields. He is motivated by getting to the heart of what it takes to enable individuals and teams to progress to their fullest potential and ambition. He has a firm belief in the resourcefulness of people and their ability to find their way forward. He is a pragmatist who aims to bring coaching and other management development techniques into the real world to meet real needs. He is particularly interested in assisting individuals and organisations to achieve high performance and in the creation of productive working environments.
Phil has been Operations Director at the Brathay Hall Trust and Head of Management Training for the BBC. As a founding director he is currently Chairman at Management Futures Consulting Ltd. Phil has experience of working as a trainer and coach abroad; he has a particular interest in cultural issues in the workplace.
Phil holds an MA in Management Learning and is an NLP Master Practitioner and qualified counsellor and social worker.
Phil has published two successful books: ‘NLP Coaching’, Open University Press 2006 and ‘Leading and Coaching Teams to Success’, Open University Press 2011. He is a regular conference speaker and has contributed to coaching and leadership discussions in the press and on radio.
He works at the most senior levels and his current client list is comprised of UK ambassadors, media heads, and leaders from organisations as diverse as Dyson, The BBC, Nissan, Nutmeg, Southampton FC, Saracens Rugby, and the NHS.
Robert is a UKCP-Accredited Psychotherapist, Qualified Executive Coach, Director of The Grove Practice and co-founder of TGPatwork, The Grove’s organisational practice. Robert has worked with a broad range of companies using therapeutic practice in industries such as consumer healthcare and beauty, technology, media and finance. He is an advocate for good mental health practices in the workplace. He is committed to helping companies improve their recognition and delivery of management practices that promote good mental health. He has led a team in a FTSE 100 company and worked for 20 years in the financial industry.
Sarah Paton Briggs
Sarah Paton Briggs brings her experience of working therapeutically with survivors of sexual abuse and rape, along with a wealth of knowledge regarding trauma therapy for military veterans and first responders.
Sarah has provided therapy for veterans funded by Walking With The Wounded and Help 4 Heroes. She has also given clinical assessment support for The Dare To Live Trust’s equine-facilitated programmes for veterans. Her clients have comprised serving members of the armed forces or emergency first-responders or statutory services. Sarah has undertaken therapy programmes either privately-funded or through Employee Assistance Programmes including private health insurance schemes for employees of the Metropolitan Police Service, Wiltshire Fire Service, Wiltshire Police, Gloucestershire Police, Wiltshire Council.
As part of The Grove’s team, Sarah co-wrote a successful proposal funded by the building’s insurer, for a psychological trauma therapy service to support a group of those who were affected by the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017. Sarah was one of the project directors who set up a multi-lingual, multi-disciplinary, multi-site trauma therapy service (which is still in operation).
Sarah is a director of The Grove Practice, where she has held a management role for over 10 years. She is a supervisor accredited by BACP and by COSRT. As an accredited psychotherapist, psychosexual & relationship therapist, drug & alcohol counsellor, Sarah has a wealth of experience working with adult clients, either as individuals or couples – where traumatic experiences often have a bearing on current client presentations. Working in a trauma-informed way, she brings an engaging and relational approach to her client work.
Trauma is a significant area of her practice. Sarah has worked with many survivors of childhood sexual abuse and rape, supporting them in making sense of what has happened and encouraging them to process what has happened so that they can reconstruct more confidence and purpose in life.

She has undertaken CPD training with internationally-acclaimed teachers in the world of psycho-traumatology:
During 2019 she will complete training in EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and Matrix Reimprinting.
In line with best practice guidelines for psycho-traumatology, Sarah has trained in a range of approaches to treating trauma, including the evidence-based protocol of CPT (Cognitive Processing Therapy) which falls under the NICE guidelines for Trauma-Focused CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). Other protocols include EMDR (Levels 1 and 2), as well as BEPP (Brief Eclectic Psychotherapy for PTSD). She has received training in assessing and diagnostics for trauma, PTSD, and Complex PTSD. Importantly for symptomatic relief as a first stage in trauma treatment, Sarah is trained in a range of approaches for emotional regulation and stabilisation of symptoms such as flashbacks or panic attacks, including STAIR (Skills Training in Affect and Interpersonal Regulation).
Equine-facilitated therapy is a gentle yet profound way in which Sarah supports trauma clients, many of whom have survived unwanted sexual experiences. The horses usually guide clients in setting healthier boundaries and building trust through safe touch. Sarah is certified in equine therapy by IFEEL and LEAP.
Sarah is a faculty member for IFEEL, teaching on an Ofqual-regulated Level 6 and emerging Level 7 practitioner training in equine-facilitated psycho-traumatology.
Sarah also teaches on The Grove’s supervision course, given her experience in supervising therapists through each stage of their professional development: as trainees, then qualified therapists, plus supporting supervisees towards BACP accreditation or UKCP registration. Her clinical management role at the practice also involves the practical application of ethical principles including boundaries, contracting, confidentiality, balancing the client’s autonomy with upholding the role of the therapist, all within the commercial context of The Grove.

Shona has 10 years’ experience running leadership skills programmes for senior leaders both in person and virtually. She believes in enabling individuals to develop their own authentic leadership style, and has worked across the UK & Ireland, Europe, USA, Middle East and Africa with a wide range of sectors including financial services, public sector, charities and tech firms.
Shona has a particular passion for diversity, equality and inclusion, helping organisations understand the true value of diversity, equality and inclusion and its impact on performance.She is very skilled at facilitating and bringing to life conversations around what it is like to work in an organisation with different cultures and leadership styles and helps leaders become culturally competent and inclusive. She has worked extensively within the NHS, supporting leading healthcare professionals to understand the impact diversity, equity and inclusion has, not only within the organisation but on patients and the wider communities in which they serve.
Shona’s background as an actor and her global experience allows her coaching style to combine empathy and challenge with a high cultural awareness.

Sarah works with individuals and organisations as an Executive Coach, Trainer and expert on Diversity and Inclusion in both the virtual space and in person.
Other courses she designs and deliver include; Influencing With Impact, Coaching Skills, Courageous Conversations and Impact and Presence. She has a strong track record of working with senior and high potential people, helping them to develop the skills and confidence to raise their impact and influence. Sarah is a co-founder of Verve Women, an organisation that reflects her passion for helping women achieve their career goals and realise their full potential. She has designed and delivered several Women In Leadership Programmes for clients including Nissan, UEFA and Barclays. She is particularly focused on Diversity and Inclusion and has delivered many Unconscious Bias Programmes globally for clients including Microsoft, Goldman Sachs & Visa.
Sarah also works extensively within The Arts & Culture Sector and in particular, is a key speaker and facilitator for The Clore Fellowship Programme.

Dr Roberta Babb
(BSc Hons, MSc, DClinPsych, CPsychol CSci AFBPsS) is the Director and owner of Third Eye Psychology Ltd. Her practice offers clinical, forensic and organisation psychological services which include coaching, consultation, supervision (individual and group), training and mentoring, assessments, and therapy.
Although Dr Babb’s clinical practice is significantly influence by psychodynamic theory, she flexibly draws on a diverse range of theoretical frameworks to inform her work. This enables her to provide integrative and comprehensive assessments which identify problem areas, potential areas for change, and integrative psychological formulations or understandings (both via individual and group processes). This process offers a deeper insight into both the global picture of the presenting difficulties/issues and the finer details, and provides a well-formed platform for the implementation of evidence-based interventions which can effect sustainable change at the conscious and unconscious level.
Dr Babb is registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) (Division of Clinical Psychology, Division of Forensic Psychology, and Division of Clinical Psychology Leadership and Management Faculty) and an approved Practitioner Psychologist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). She is also a Member of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). Her qualifications include a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology, a MSc in Forensic Psychology and a Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. She holds postgraduate diplomas in Clinical Supervision and Consultancy, Organisational Development and Executive Coaching, psychodynamic psychotherapy (foundation) and a professional qualification in forensic psychodynamic psychotherapy. She has attended specialist training events for group therapy and supervision.
Dr Lopa Winters
Dr Lopa Winters is an Executive Coach and Organisational Consultant. She works using a systemic-psychodynamic model having graduated the Tavistock Consulting’s Executive Coaching programme which is validated by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council to Senior Practitioner level.
She is an experienced workplace group facilitator and regular member of staff at Group Relations Conferences.
By background she is medically qualified and is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. She has practiced in the NHS for almost two decades.
Dr Winters now works in both the NHS and corporate sectors offering coaching, consultancy and clinical services.
Applicants are expected to be qualified and experienced professionals in a helping profession, who are secure in their mode of practice. This will be covered in the application form. All applicants are expected to:
